Overcome gym anxiety: Your 5-step guide to confidence

Ever feel a sense of dread or nervousness just thinking about going to the gym?

That feeling has a name: gym anxiety or gymtimidation. It’s the anxiety or fear some people experience in a gym setting and it can affect anyone. It is often fueled by concerns about being judged, not knowing how to use equipment, or simply feeling out of place. If that sounds familiar, trust me, you’re not alone.

I remember my first time going to the gym. Hands sweating, heart racing – I was just as scared to step inside as anyone else. Gym anxiety is quite common, and as someone who works with newbies all the time, I’ve seen that wide-eyed, lost puppy expression more times than I can count!

The good news? That terrifying feeling doesn’t have to be permanent. Let’s see how you can go from hiding in the changing rooms to owning the weights section in just five simple steps.

1. Reconnaissance mission 🧐

First things first – scope the place out! Pop in for a quick tour when it’s quiet. Use this chance to get your bearings without the pressure of a full workout. Where are the loos? Where can you fill your water bottle? Which machines look the least intimidating?

💙 This way the next time you arrive, it will have a sense of familiarity.

2. Off-peak is your best mate 🕢

Consider starting during quieter times. Mid-morning, early afternoon, or late evening sessions give you space to faff about without feeling like everyone’s watching.

🙋‍♀️ Fewer people = less pressure = more confidence.

3. Have a plan (but keep it simple) 📝

Here’s an idea: decide on 3-5 exercises you’ll do before you go. Nothing complicated – maybe some treadmill time, a bit on the bike, and a couple of machines that don’t look like medieval torture devices. 😅

4. Bring a friend (or find one) 👭

Everything’s less scary with backup. Drag a friend along, or better yet, book a session with a trainer (like yours truly!). In our semi-private sessions at Yonder, you’ll train with just 3 other people. And even better: people who were once in your shoes.

🤩 Nothing beats having someone who can give you that “you’ve got this” nod when you’re feeling wobbly.

5. Remember: no one's actually looking 👀

Here’s the big secret – that fit person lifting in the corner? They’re too busy focusing on squeezing out that last rep to notice what you’re doing. Most gym-goers are focused on their own workouts, their own music, their own worlds.

👍 And on the off chance someone is watching? They’re probably thinking, “Good on them for showing up!” We all started somewhere, and most fitness folks respect anyone making the effort.

The takeaway 🤍

Building gym confidence isn’t about being perfect – it’s about showing up consistently and being kind to yourself through the awkward bits.
